The Ancient Greek Olympic games play a big role in their history. The Olympics, held in Olympia, were broken into different games. Each of these games celebrated a different god. Zeus was the king of gods at Olympia and Nemea. Apollon was the god of light and reason this was celebrated in Delphi. In Isthmia it was the god of sea and horses, Poseidon. It was believed that the gods were the reason for the victory. GYMNASIUMS
In every Greek city you would find a Gymnasium and a Palestra (a training ground for wrestling). These were where the young boys and athletes were trained, they had an all round education. They learnt exercises for the body, the mind, music, arithmetic, grammar and reading. BODY CARE
Due to the fact that the Greek athletes competed clothe-less they had to take great care of their skin to protect it from the sun. In preparation for an event an athlete would cover their body in oil and then dust themselves with light sand. This protected them from the sun and from the stick their trainer would beat them with if they did not do the exercises properly. The then used a strigil to scrape the oil, sand and sweat off their skin. WOMEN
Women were not permitted to compete in the games. However if they were unmarried they could be a spectator. CHEATING
Before each of the games started the athletes were required to make an oath, in this oath they said they would win fairly. However some athletes did not follow the oath and tried to win by cheating. If you were caught cheating you had to pay a fine. This was used to buy a statue, the name of the offender would be carved into this. The statues were placed along the entrance as a reminder not to follow. PRIZES
Today the first, second and third placed athletes are given a Gold, silver or bronze medal. The winner in the ancient games would get given a wreath. In various places these wreaths were made out of different leaves. GOD NIKE
There was also believed to be a God called 'Nike' this meant 'Victory'. War in Ancient Greece The Greeks took all sorts of Games seriously, but especially the Olympic Games. The people of Greece believed that the gods loved to see men's bodies beautiful and strong, so the Greek took extra care of their bodies to please the gods. The Greek loved to turn everything into a game, so they created the Olympic games to keep themselves fit and amused. The Greeks were the ones that actually invented the Olympics, they held the Olympics in honour if the gods. The Greeks would only let the men participate in the Olympics and even then it was only Greek Nationals, the women however were not even allowed to watch. On the middle day of the Olympic festival 100 oxen were sacrificed in honour of the gods, Athletes also sometimes made small sacrifices for themselves. Horse Racing was a popular sport for the wealthy and a popular attraction. This sport was only for wealthy people because only they could afford all of the equipment, training and feed for themselves and the horse. Wars we very common in Ancient Greece. The Greeks lived in little city-states. They were like a small town in the United States today. They would have no more than 100,000 people in each city-state. These city-states- Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes- were always fighting each other over their borders. Often they would create allies and come together in leagues. But sometimes, the Greeks fought in other countries. They invaded other countries and took over, or they raided other cities and took their stuff. They would often fight for pay, when one country fought another. Even though the Ancient Greeks had many wars, we don't know much about them. Although, there are 4 main wars that we do know about. We know about them because of the writing of Home and Herodotus and Thucydides and Arrian. The 4 main wars are the Trojan War, The Persian Wars (which went from 490-480 BC) and the Peloponnesian War (which went from 441-404 BC) and the campaigns of Alexander the Great (which lasted from 331-323 BC). Then, a little bit later, Greece was taken over by the Romans in 146 BC, which we know a little bit about thanks to Polybius. The Trojan war was a war fought between the state of troy and the state of Sparta. In the those days different countries used to build walls to protect them. They varied from just a few feet high and the sometimes even around 20 feet high. In times of war the gates would be securely closed with locks. There were always at least one stair case that went around the wall, during the wars soldiers would stand up at the top of the stairs and shoot any intruders with bows and arrows. The walls around Troy were very tall and strong, during the Trojan war the Greeks had been trying for ten years to get through the wall to their enemies with out success. And the Trojan couldn’t seem to get the Greeks away. So in a way neither side won. Soon after the Greeks thought to them selves, 'we have to try another approach'. A Greek general Odysseus, had a clever idea. The idea was that they would sale away admitting defeat, the Greeks were famous for their art and as a war tradition to leave a gift after defeat. So the Greeks left a wooden horse just out side the gates, but hidden inside that horse were 30 Greek soldiers. When the Trojan soldiers saw that the Greeks were sailing away, they couldn’t believe it, had they won the war? The Trojan soldiers immediately saw the hand crafted horse, and as predicted they thought it was a defeat gift from the Greeks. So the Trojans wheeled it in. Some people wanted to burn the horse, but the other Trojans said lets keep it as a reminder of how we defeated Greece. That night while the people of Troy slept soundly the 30 men climbed out of the horse and opened the gates of Troy, letting the Greek army in, and that was the end of Troy. The war was all started on when Paris abducted Princess Helen from Greek to Troy. Because the princess was so beautiful, many princes wanted to marry her, she had quite a few husbands and her father feared of what the princes may do to his daughter. So her father, to insure Helens safety made all the princes that wanted to marry Helen swear an oath to protect Helen and her chosen groom.
